What is a nurse practitioner?

Nurse Practitioners are Advanced Practice Registered Nurses. They have more responsibilities and education than registered nurses. They can prescribe medications, examine patients, diagnose illnesses, order and interpret lab and diagnostic tests. They provide treatment much like a physician. Their experience as working nurses gives them a holistic and wellness orientation that emphasizes health education, risk identification and reduction, and preventive care through lifestyle modification. Because of this, they make ideal primary care providers.
